Julian opie: materials and techniques
Julian Opie used a variety of techniques to create his artwork, however in his portraits he uses ink-printing techniques using vinyl. Opie reduces his portraits down to their essential features, using small black circles for eyes and a distinctive, bright colour palette. Although Opie uses printing techniques to create his work the easiest way to recreate one of his portraits is to use digital methods, like photoshop or illustrator. Unlike a lot of other traditional artists Opie is not hesitant to use digital techniques, especially when creating sculptures. computers can be used in atet to create a range of results but what Opie has created is a quintessential digital portrait, bold colours, thick outlines and very simple yet effective pieces.
All of Julian Opie's portraits are very similar however they can be easily distinguished by the colour of the background, as far as i can tell Opie never uses the same background colour for his paintings, each one is individual yet belongs to one body of work.
